========READ FULLY BEFORE USING MACSCAN==========
MacScan is an administrative spyware detection utility for Mac OS X. Thank you for downloading this public beta of MacScan. As a public beta tester, we ask that you please submit any bug reports or errors that occur to us so that we may see that they are fixed promptly.
In short MacScan's goal is to detect, isolate and remove spyware from your
system such as keystroke loggers and trojan horses. Keystroke loggers are
programs that are used to record everything that is typed on the keyboard,
and log them to a file. Some keystroke loggers will send the logs over
the Internet to a specified address programmed into the application. The
loggers are not limited to what text they record, if you're typing a
letter, or typing your credit card or social security number it is all
logged.
Programs exist that, when installed and/or running, allow
a remote user to connect to your computer over the Internet, network or
telephone line, effectively taking control over your computer, including the files stored on it. There are two types of these programs: Commercial ones, which cost money and allow remote administration activity, and the ones that are intended for control over the computer without the user's knowledge of the activity. MacScan will not remove any of the commercial remote administrative applications. It will however, make the user aware they exist on the computer in case they were activated accidentally, on purpose without acknowledgement, or the administrator forgot to deactivate after use. The other type of programs, commonly known as backdoors or trojan horses, are identified by MacScan and are can be
detected, isolated, and removed.
Protect your privacy by checking for known programs which could be
running without your acknowledgement by running MacScan. We're always adding more support; if you find an application that is currently not detected or is not being detected properly, please contact us
via the contact information below.
Using MacScan
Upon launching MacScan you can choose which type of scan you wish to
perform: Full Scan, Quick Scan, or Custom Scan. The Quick Scan simply checks your home directory for known spyware applications, but the quick scan will not scan the whole hard disk for spyware. Full Scan scans your whole hard drive for spyware. Custom Scan allows you to scan a folder or drive for spyware.
Under Mac OS X, to perform a full volume scan or scan of files which belong to another user restricted by privileges, you must be logged in as one of the administrator accounts and authenticate when prompted. MacScan 2.0 for OS X now has authentication support built in. Simply run the MacScan program, and it will prompt you to authenticate. If you choose to authenticate, MacScan will be run with root privileges, and you will be able to scan any directory on your hard drive. If you choose not to authenticate, MacScan will run in "normal" mode, and you will not be able to scan folders that you do not have privileges to access.
Without granting MacScan administrative rights, it will only be able to scan files your account has privileges to access, and this may prevent a successful full audit for spyware.
Detect, Isolate and Remove
Detection will only identify what is believed to be spyware and will only
log what it has found. Upon detecting the spyware, the administrator will
then be able to isolate the items. Before isolating the found components, be sure it is actually spyware and not a program that has been inadvertently been picked up as a spyware program. If you have identified a program that has been identified as spyware and you are positive it is not, please inform us of the conflicting application.
